A Musical Theatre Performer’s Guide to Auditions, Repertoire & Performance
Build Your Book is a new Saturday workshop and masterclass series designed to help musical theatre performers develop the skills, confidence, repertoire, and professional tools they need to grow as performers.
From preparing for the audition room to developing a versatile repertoire and learning how to approach different musical theatre styles, each workshop gives students the opportunity to work with experienced instructors, receive individualized feedback, and gain practical skills they can immediately apply to their next audition or performance.
The series launches in Fall 2026 with two foundational workshops and continues throughout the year with specialized repertoire masterclasses exploring different composers, eras, styles, and performance skills.
Land the Role: Audition Workshop
A Musical Theatre Audition Intensive
Have a dream role? Bring a 16–32 bar cut that you’d want to use to audition for it! Students will perform their audition song, receive vocal and acting feedback, and work to refine their cut and performance choices. We’ll also explore how to choose strong audition material and make confident choices in the audition room.
Your dream role is out there. Are you ready to audition for it?
Landing the role starts long before you walk into the audition room. Land the Role gives students the opportunity to experience the musical theatre audition process from preparation through performance. Students will come prepared with a 16–32 bar cut in the style of their dream role and their current performance resume, then work through a realistic audition experience with an accompanist and receive immediate, individualized feedback.
This workshop is designed to help students understand not only how to audition, but how to prepare themselves to walk into an audition room feeling confident, prepared, and ready to perform.
At the Workshop
Students will learn how to:
- Choose appropriate audition repertoire
- Select a strong 16–32 bar cut
- Find material that showcases their individual strengths
- Consider the style and world of the show
- Prepare a song vocally and dramatically
- Build and maintain a performance resume
- Know what to bring to an audition
- Dress appropriately for different types of auditions
- Understand what directors and creative teams are looking for
Students will also receive guidance on repertoire selection and what types of songs they should consider adding to their audition book over time.
The Mock Audition
Each student will have an individual audition with a live accompanist. Students will:
- Enter and introduce themselves
- Present their resume
- Perform their prepared cut
- Receive direction
- Make an adjustment
- Perform again
- Receive immediate feedback
Instructors will provide feedback on:
- Vocal technique
- Acting through song
- Characterization
- Performance choices
- Staging
- Musicality
- Audition presence
The goal is to create a supportive environment that mirrors the expectations of a real audition while giving students the opportunity to learn from the experience.
The Dance Call
Students will also participate in a short dance audition. They will learn how to:
- Pick up choreography quickly
- Stay present when learning something unfamiliar
- Recover from mistakes
- Perform rather than simply execute choreography
- Present themselves confidently
- Understand what a creative team may be looking for during a dance call
Professional Headshot Session
A strong audition package isn’t complete without a professional headshot. Students will have the opportunity to work with a professional photographer during the workshop to capture a theatrical headshot they can use for future auditions and performance opportunities.
Students should arrive photo ready, including appropriate hair, makeup, and audition-appropriate clothing.

Contemporary Musical Theatre: Mix/Belt Workshop
A Repertoire & Vocal Intensive
Discover new material while strengthening your mix and belt! Students will explore contemporary musical theatre repertoire, work through vocal exercises and coaching, and learn how to find songs that highlight their strengths and expand their audition book.

The second workshop in the Build Your Book series focuses on contemporary musical theatre repertoire and the vocal skills needed to perform it. Students will explore contemporary musical theatre styles while developing their belt and mix, strengthening their individual sound, and learning how to make smarter choices when building their audition repertoire.
This workshop is about more than learning new songs. It’s about understanding why a song belongs in your book and what it tells a creative team about you as a performer.
Contemporary Repertoire
Students will explore selections from contemporary musical theatre and examine:
- Contemporary vocal styles
- Pop and rock influences
- Character-driven repertoire
- Contemporary phrasing
- Storytelling through contemporary music
- Performance style and authenticity
Belt & Mix
Students will explore healthy approaches to:
- Belt
- Mix
- Vocal placement
- Resonance
- Breath support
- Dynamics
- Vocal intensity
- Developing a strong, sustainable sound
The focus isn’t simply on singing louder. Students will learn how technique, musicality, character, and intention work together to create an effective contemporary musical theatre performance.
Building Your Book
Students will learn how to think strategically about their repertoire. Questions we’ll explore include:
- What songs showcase my voice?
- What songs showcase my acting?
- Do I have enough variety?
- Do I need a ballad? Do I need an uptempo?
- What styles should I have prepared?
- What material fits my age and casting opportunities?
- How can I choose songs that feel authentic to me?
Individualized Coaching
Students will work with instructors on selected repertoire and receive feedback on:
- Vocal technique
- Belt and mix
- Musicality
- Interpretation
- Characterization
- Phrasing
- Performance choices
