Audition Tips & Tricks

Many people may think that the main event for performers is a production, but a close competitor of this comes at the very beginning of the process with auditions! Auditions are a time for you to show off your abilities as a performer by taking on the role of one or more characters. Your talents will be a great asset to you, but be sure to follow these tips in order to make your audition a successful one! We can’t wait to see you on stage!

  • Be Prepared!
    • For Newsies Jr. auditions, you already know the song that you will be asked to sing. Boys will be asked to perform Santa Fe, and the ladies will take on Watch What Happens. Although the staff will teach these songs to you quickly at auditions, it will make a difference if you come into the audition familiar with the lyrics, melody, and story that the songs tell. Remember, the team is not just listening to your voice, they are watching your character and feeling any connection you are able to make with your performance!
    • During callbacks, you may be asked to perform a variety of things. This may seem unexpected, but you can still be prepared for this! Be sure to familiarize yourself with the Breakdown of Characters, the songs, and the story of the musical. Being familiar with these things will help you feel confident to perform anything asked of you.
    • Bonus tip: watch other performers and see what they do a great job with! Check out Footloose at CCC, a performance in your community, or videos of professionals. Seeing great performers might inspire you to try something great yourself!
  • Practice, Practice, Practice!
    • Once you have become familiar with the songs and characters, take time to really practice how you might perform at auditions. Even if it feels silly, better your performance by singing in front of the mirror or recording yourself. You might also bring your family and friends in on the fun by rehearsing with them! Any real practice time will help you gain confidence when the time comes for the audition in front of the team.
  • Be Confident, Be Yourself, and Smile!
    • Auditions can be intimidating, but the best way to stand out is to be true to who you are. Don’t compare yourself to someone else—directors want to see your unique qualities. Stay positive, be enthusiastic, and show that you’re eager to learn and collaborate. Confidence and a positive attitude go a long way in leaving a lasting impression.
    • Even if you are not interested in a featured dancing role, all performers complete a dance audition. Why? Everyone dances in this show, and dance is a great way to show off your personality, confidence, and acting skills as well! When learning and performing the audition choreography, be sure to give it all you’ve got, stay confident even if you miss a step, and don’t forget to finish off with a smile!

We can’t wait to see the talented group that joins us. Follow these tips to make it your best audition yet! Remember, you won’t always get the role you’re hoping for. Don’t let this get you discouraged; you have the chance to bring any character to life in a way only you can each time you step on stage. Keep shining, CCC!
